Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 4, 1908: “The first people’s primary ever held in Douglas County was attracting a relatively light vote today for both state and county tickets. Farmers coming in late, as expected, were due to boost the turnout but evidence was it would be light. : The People’s Summer Theatre Co. gave its first performance at its new open air theater in the 800 block of New Hampshire last night. The company was disappointed in not being able to secure all the performers scheduled for the opening but still put on a creditable performance. : ‘Lawrence will have an electric car line financed by local men, controlled by local men and in every way a home affair, completed inside of the next two years,’ C.E. Sutton, a prominent Douglas County stock raiser, told a World reporter this morning. He said the local system would be the best of its kind to be found and that Lawrence would become the center station of an interurban line between Kansas City and Topeka.
