Rescuers search for missing canoeist

Since about 5:50 p.m. Saturday, a 26-year-old man who was canoeing with two friends has been missing. According to the missing man’s girlfriend, three men were canoeing near North 1500 Road and East 2400 Road, near the Douglas County and Johnson County line. The canoe capsized. Two men were found on shore at a boat ramp and were believed to be in good condition.

Douglas County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Kari Wempe said a Kansas Search and Rescue dog unit was searching on the banks near the Kansas River by 10:30 p.m. She said if the man wasn’t found by the end of the night, the search would continue this morning.
