Man surrenders to police following standoff

Police officers check their equipment before entering Bainbridge Circle around noon Sunday, where a man held a standoff with the police throughout the morning. The man had refused to leave his home following a domestic disturbance early Sunday morning. The man surrendered around 12:30 p.m. and was taken to the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center for questioning.

A man surrendered to Lawrence police about 12:30 p.m. today, following a standoff in the 3000 block of Bainbridge Circle.

The man, who police did not identify, has been taken to the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, where he will be questioned, said Lawrence Police Chief Ron Olin.

The man had refused to leave his home, following a domestic disturbance early this morning.

Olin said that before the man’s surrender that the man had released three children – ages 2, 4 and 7 – from the residence. At the time of his surrender, the man was the only person remaining in the residence, the chief said.

During the standoff, police blocked the entrance to Bainbridge Circle at Lawrence Avenue. The home is just southeast of the intersection of Sixth Street and Lawrence Avenue. Lawrence Avenue remained open to traffic.

Police were dispatched to the home after Lawrence-Douglas County dispatchers received a 911 hangup call from the residence at 4:01 a.m., dispatchers said. Olin said police are not certain whether the man had any weapons in the home.
