Chancellor fields questions about KU
The new campus Multicultural Resource Center isn’t even complete, yet it has already ignited controversy with at least one Kansas University group.
An LJWorld.com user asked KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway on Monday why the Kansas Union addition’s air conditioner would be placed on the roof, blocking out “one of the best views in the city from the 6th floor Malott Room.” Hemenway was participating in an online chat with LJWorld.com readers.
Hemenway said that he would review the placement of the air conditioner soon and review whether anything could be done, though the building is nearly complete.
“In the end, every decision has the potential to obstruct someone’s view, but we have to make decisions and move on,” he wrote.
The controversy between the KU Hospital and School of Medicine was also a popular topic, with one poster asking if the chancellor’s service on advisory boards in the Kansas City area has an effect on his “selling KU Hospital out to the (Kansas City, Mo.) establishment.”
“It is not uncommon in KU’s history for the KU chancellor to serve civic boards across the region. I serve because it is one way that I can help KU be successful throughout the region,” he wrote.
Hemenway said he led the effort to create a separate, more successful hospital authority several years ago but said the best way for the medical center and the hospital to continue to grow is to train more doctors. Hemenway has argued that affiliating with St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., will do just that.
In the chat, Hemenway also said the university was making progress in creating a safer environment in light of last spring’s attack at Virginia Tech. He was short on specifics but said the massacre report that was released recently would be considered by the campus safety task force.
