Chicago ? The Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday announced six more recalls of products tainted with lead paint or metal, raising the total of lead recalls in October to 25 – the highest monthly total of such recalls in the 30 years that the agency has been policing the banned toxic metal.

The 25 recalls this month are more than have been announced in any single year over the past three decades.

Thursday’s recalls ranged from 38,000 “Go Diego Go!” Animal Rescue Boats manufactured in China for toy giant Fisher-Price Inc. to 80,000 bobble-head cake decorations with green bases featuring 15 professional football teams. Both items contain lead paint.

Also recalled for lead paint were 97,000 toy garden tools sold by Jo-Ann Stores Inc. and 142,000 purple Halloween pails with witch decorations sold in Family Dollar Stores.

The commission also announced the recall of 110,000 WeGlow children’s metal jewelry sold by WeGlow International and 198,000 pieces of children’s jewelry sold under the names of Beary Cute, Expressions and Sassy & Chic, all sold by Greenbrier International Inc. The items contain high levels of lead metal, the agency said.

A Chicago Tribune analysis of CPSC data shows that since lead was banned in 1977, the agency has issued 179 recalls for products tainted with lead paint or lead metal. A total of 95 of those recalls – or 53 percent – came since Jan. 1, 2006.

Continuing what has been a steady trend, all but two of the 25 recalled items were manufactured in China.

Of the other 19 recalls announced earlier this month, the single largest item was the recall of 1.6 million Cub Scouts Totem badges bearing wolf and bear images tainted with lead paint.

Also recalled were 2,500 collectible Jeff Gordon mini-helmets, 55,000 skull pails filled with Halloween candy mix, 10,000 bendable dinosaur toys, 7,800 Cracker Barrel Old Country Store travel art sets, 49,000 J.C. Penney Disney Deluxe Winnie-the-Pooh 23-piece play sets and 200,000 bookmarks sold under the names of Cool Clips and Mini Cool Clips.
