Report of shooting may have been hoax
New Jersey ? Police investigating a 911 call describing a shooting early Sunday at the College of New Jersey believe the call may have been a hoax.
The caller reported a shooting at Travers Hall shortly after 6 a.m., and e-mails were sent to students asking them to remain in their locations while the investigation continued.
Later, students were told they could move about the campus, although security checkpoints had been set up. By late morning, a message posted on the university’s Web site said investigators “believe the original report may have been inaccurate.”
“Other than the 911 call, we have no evidence that I know of that a shooting actually occurred,” said Matthew Golden, the school’s director of communications.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the call as a possible hoax, spokeswoman Casey DiBlasio said. No charges had been filed as of early afternoon.
The 3,600-student campus is located in Ewing Township, roughly 6 miles from Trenton.
