Clinton tops Democrats in contributions

? Hillary Rodham Clinton cleaned up in the latest contest for campaign contributions, raising $27 million in the three-month reporting period that ended Sunday and replacing last quarter’s cash champ, Barack Obama, as this quarter’s top money draw.

The quarterly spurt by Clinton, the New York senator and Democratic presidential front runner, pulls her closer in overall fundraising to Obama, who trails her in the polls but holds a slight edge in overall contributions by virtue of an early lead.

Obama, a senator from Illinois, totaled $20 million in contributions in the past quarter, including $19 million in primary campaign donations. So far this year, Obama has garnered $74.9 million in donations he can spend to campaign for the Democratic nomination.

Clinton has raised about $62 million for primary spending and has transferred another $10 million from her senatorial campaign chest.
