Sixth Street accident snarls traffic

No major injuries reported

An accident Tuesday morning snarled traffic near Sixth and Iowa streets.

Emergency workers responded about 10:45 a.m. to the accidents. A box truck was blocking traffic turning south onto Iowa Street from westbound Sixth Street. A small school bus also was involved.

Authorities said a short school bus was heading east in the left lane on Sixth Street and hit the truck that was turning left from Crestline onto Sixth. The bus hit the truck, which lost its brakes and front left tire, but continued to roll through the intersection of Sixth and Iowa, where it stopped just east of the light in the left lane.

There were no major injuries. Two men in the truck – 32 and 19, from Topeka – were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the bus is a woman, 33, from Pomona. Her passengers were a 53-year-old woman from Perry and her grandson, 2, from Lawrence.
