Sugakane set to ‘turn It Up’

Rapper Sugakane hopes to pump up Kansas University football fans with his new single, “Turn It Up.”

“Lawrence, Kansas,” the song begins. “It’s your boy Sugakane. Get on your feet and make some noise for your Kansas Jayhawks!”

Sugakane, a.k.a. Topeka native John Sweet, will be in Lawrence Saturday for a tailgate party before KU’s Homecoming game against Nebraska.

The party runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Campanile Hill. Kickoff to the game is at 11:30 a.m.

Sweet, who now lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, was an all-state performer in basketball at Highland Park High School. He played for the Hutchinson Community College national championship basketball team in 1994.

Saturday’s party also includes a video-game challenge featuring NCAA Football by EA Sports, played on Xbox 360. Fans can compete for prizes.

To sign up for the football challenge, call 856-0863.

The tailgate is sponsored by Sunflower Broadband. Sunflower Broadband is owned by the World Company, which also owns the Journal-World.

Sugakane’s latest single is meant to get the KU crowd into the game.

Before you get too excited about the song, though, consider this: There’s also a MySpace page devoted to another version of the song – dedicated to the K-State Wildcats.
