New principal named for Schwegler School

KU grad spent last two years in Topeka

Lawrence Public Schools Superintendent Randy Weseman announced this morning his recommendation of Jared Comfort to be principal next year at Schwegler School, 2201 Ousdahl Road.

Weseman will formally ask board of education members to hire Comfort at tonight’s 7 p.m. meeting at district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive.

Comfort is a Lawrence resident, a Kansas University graduate and for the last two years has been assistant principal at Williams Magnet School in Topeka.

“Jared shows a strong commitment to student improvement and is a good fit for Schwegler school. We think his excellent leadership and communication skills will prove beneficial as he begins to get to know students, parents and staff in the Schwegler school community,” Weseman said this morning in a statement.

Comfort, who has also served as a lead teacher at Sylvan Learning Center in Lawrence for two years, said the opportunity excited him.

“I am proud to join a school community that has been meeting student needs and striving to help each child achieve his or her potential for the past 50 years,” he said.

Weseman also announced that current Schwegler Principal Angelique Kobler will become the district’s new division director of instructional services in July. This move is part of an administrative restructuring plan announced months ago.

Schwegler was built in 1957, and 371 students attended the school during the last school year, according to Lawrence public schools.
