6News video: Art a la carte

Welcome to Art a la Carte. I’m Journal-World arts editor Mindie Paget.

Lawrence’s 11-year-old wheeled art parade rolls again this weekend. Featuring everything from simple children’s bikes decked in streamers to farm equipment transformed into a flying saucer, the Art Tougeau Parade begins its Mass Street procession at noon Saturday. A block party will follow, with music from local bands, including Truckstop Honeymoon.

Lawrence artists are banding together on Saturday evening to raise money for victims of the Greensburg tornado. Ric Averill will be the

vaudeville host as local acts Alferd Packer Memorial String Band, Floyd the Barber and Das Furbender perform between comedy outtakes. “Greenbacks for Greensburg” starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence Arts Center. There’s a $5 minimum donation, with all proceeds going to the Greensburg Disaster Fund.

Also on Saturday, a unique new exhibition by Lawrence artist Stephen Johnson opens at the Spencer Museum of Art. To create “Abstract Alphabet,” Johnson started with alliterative phrases for each letter of the alphabet. He then created works of art that correspond to the words. For example, “X” is an X-ray of a xylophone, and “C” features between 10,000 and 15,000 candies in a 48-inch-diameter collage. The show remains on view through August 5.
