Lawrence groups organize fundraisers

How to donate

The Haviland Friends Church has set up an account to help Greensburg residents.

Checks should be made payable to the Greensburg Relief Fund and sent to Haviland State Bank, P.O. Box 348, Haviland 67059. For more information, call the bank at (620) 862-5222.

Lawrence organizations continue to set up fundraising efforts for those devastated by the tornado that ripped through Greensburg.

Inspired by a co-worker who lost her childhood home in the tornado, Lawrence Arts Center staff members are having a benefit May 19.

Meanwhile, the Kansas University Alumni Association said it planned to raise at least $25,000 in an effort dubbed Green for Greensburg.

On Monday, the Alumni Association began accepting donations in front of the Adams Alumni Center. It plans to collect donations there until graduation, said Mike Davis, senior vice president of alumni programs.

Even rain didn’t keep donors away, Davis said, noting the Alumni Association had already received a $100 check by early Monday afternoon.

“Just the fact that we’re all Kansans means something to everybody,” Davis said.

But there’s more than a state bond at the arts center.

Stacy Barnes, who has worked at the arts center as a ceramics artist, teacher and administrative coordinator, grew up in Greensburg. Her parents’ home and grade school were destroyed Friday night.

Ric Averill, director of the drama department, said the idea of putting on a benefit came during Monday’s staff meeting.

“It gave us a more personal attachment to the Greensburg tragedy,” Averill said. “It’ll make a difference for at least one family.”

Every penny raised during the benefit will be passed on to the Greensburg residents, Averill said. There will be a $5 minimum donation at the door. The benefit, which will be from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the arts center, 940 N.H., will feature several bands and comedy acts.
