Events mark National Music Week

Performances this week across Lawrence coincide with the local celebration of National Music Week.

Events begin today and end May 13. National Music Week is sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Lawrence Music Club. The theme for this year is “Music Lifts All of our Spirits Worldwide.”

Following is a representative list of the music events this week:

Sunday: Art in the Park with music in the gazebo, noon to 5 p.m., South Park; Carillon concert, 5 p.m., KU Memorial Campanile; Chamber Choir and Concert Choir, 7:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway.

Monday: South Junior High School Band Feeder Concert, 7 p.m., 2734 La.; Spank Tone Open Jam session, 10 p.m., The Jazzhaus, 926 1/2 Mass.,

Tuesday: Organ recital with Elisa Williams Bickers, accompanied by the Lawrence Women’s Chorale, 7:30 p.m., KU’s Bales Organ Recital Hall; University Band Concert, 7:30 p.m., Lied Center; Free State High School Spring Choral Concert, 7:30 p.m., 4700 Overland Drive.

Wednesday: Southwest Junior High School eighth and ninth grades spring band concert, 6:30 p.m., Lawrence High School, 1901 La.; World Music Choir, 7:30 p.m., Bales Organ Recital Hall.

Thursday: KU Youth Chorus, 5 p.m., Murphy Hall Room 328; Central Junior High School band feeder concert, 7 p.m., 1400 Mass.

Friday: Classical guitarist John Jervis, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Scarlet Orchid, 2223 La.; Bishop Seabury Academy, “Seussical the Musical,” 7:30 p.m., 4120 Clinton Parkway; West Junior High School Chorale concert, “I’ve Got the Music in Me,” 7 p.m., 2700 Harvard Road.

Saturday: West Junior High School Chorale concert, “I’ve Got the Music in Me,” 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.; classical guitarist John Jervis, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Scarlet Orchid.
