Driver arrested after brush with police
A 22-year-old man was arrested early Saturday on charges of brushing a Lawrence police officer with his car following an incident at a local night spot.
Police said Deon Alexander Whitten, Lawrence, was arrested following an incident with police that began about 1:45 a.m. Saturday at Club Axis, 821 Iowa, former site of the Moon Bar.
Police said officers ordered the man to leave the parking lot after he was yelling at another man. However, the man returned again and police escorted him to his vehicle, they said.
As the man left, he made a U-turn and headed toward two Lawrence police officers, according to the report.
The two officers had to jump out of the way of the vehicle, but it brushed one of the officer’s legs, according to the police report.
Officers followed Whitten in a police vehicle, stopped him and arrested him on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.
He was released on $10,000 bond Saturday evening, according to Douglas County Jail records.
