Doctors, patients

To the editor:

Once again, physicians and health providers are asking for a free pass via House Bill 2530. We already have a cap on medical malpractice damages, and now health providers are seeking to exempt professional services by a physician or health care provider from the Kansas Consumer Protection Act. The Kansas House has already passed the bill and it is up for Senate vote next week. Where is this going to end? Will the next step be exempting health care providers from all professional liability?

Doctors and health professionals enjoy the perks and privileges of being the most highly educated, compensated and regarded professionals in the world. Members of the health industry enter their profession knowing full well the responsibility involved in caring for the lives of others. Since when does it make sense to lower the standards for the most highly regarded profession in the world? How does it make sense that my auto mechanic will be held to higher professional standards than my physician?

My last breath may depend on a health care professional, and yours may, too. We all want to be assured that our lives are in good hands. Let’s remember, “for those to whom much is given, much is expected” and insist on the highest standards for all professionals, including physicians and health providers.
