Hit and run, gun bring three arrests

Several officers from the Lawrence Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call that a pedestrian had been hit by a car early Sunday morning in Lawrence.

A vehicle struck a man on the street shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday morning in the 700 block of Massachusetts Street. The vehicle, which had two occupants, then left the scene but was later stopped by police, who detained the driver and passenger inside.

The occupants of the vehicle alleged that the man who was struck had twice pointed a handgun at the driver of the vehicle. It was at that point that the vehicle hit the man and took off from the scene, they said.

The man who was struck by the vehicle refused medical treatment at the scene and did not appear to be injured. He was subsequently arrested. Police recovered a handgun at the scene of the incident.

According to Douglas County Jail records, a 22-year-old Lawrence woman and two Lawrence men, ages 27 and 23, were arrested after 3 a.m. Sunday on charges of unlawful assembly and given notices to appear in Municipal Court. The 27-year-old Lawrence man also was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault, and he was the only one of the three who remained in jail Sunday night.

More information about each person’s alleged role in the incident was unavailable Sunday, as Sgt. Susan Hadl said Lawrence police officers were still investigating the incident.
