Woman injured in 2-vehicle wreck on U.S. 59

A two-vehicle accident Saturday evening sent one person to Overland Park Regional Medical Center and closed nearly a mile of U.S. Highway 59 about three miles south of Lawrence on Saturday night.

Emergency crews were dispatched about 7:30 p.m. Saturday to U.S. 59 just south of N. 935 Road in Douglas County.

A pickup truck with a male driver was going north on U.S. 59, drifted left of the center line and collided with a southbound vehicle carrying a female driver.

The two vehicles entered a ditch on the west side of the road and came to rest with the pickup truck on top of the car.

Emergency workers had to extricate the drivers of both vehicles because of the possibility of fire.

The woman, whose identity was not released Saturday, was taken by ground ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She suffered injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening. A condition report was not available.

The male driver, whose name was not released, refused medical treatment at the scene.

Douglas County spokeswoman Lt. Kari Wempe said sheriff’s deputies were investigating whether alcohol played a role in the accident.

Sheriff’s deputies redirected traffic away from U.S. 59 for more than an hour after the accident and reopened the road shortly before 9 p.m.
