Search for missing kayaker called off

An Edwardsville man is presumed to have drowned Tuesday on the Kansas River after a kayaking accident.

Ladd Fish, 34, disappeared after his kayak capsized just east of the Interstate 435 bridge while kayaking with a friend.

At 1:35 p.m., a worker near the weir under construction east of the bridge called 911 after seeing the two kayakers capsize in fast-moving water near the southern end of the jetty. The other kayaker swam to shore, while Fish appeared to try to swim to the northern bank of the river, said Kevin Shirley, battalion commander and public information officer for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department.

The name of the other kayaker, a 19-year-old friend of Fish’s, has not been released.

The Edwardsville Fire Department assisted Kansas City, Kan., and Shawnee fire departments in searching the Kansas River until dark. A Kansas City, Mo., police helicopter with an infrared camera circled several miles of the river, and three boats from Kansas City, Kan., and Shawnee fire departments searched the river.

Again on Wednesday, searchers looked for Fish’s body. However, they called off the search about 3:30 p.m.

Fish’s friend was not injured, Shirley said.
