Man convicted of theft within 15 minutes

A jury needed just 15 minutes to convict a a man of felony theft on Tuesday.

Rufus Smith, 47, was found guilty of entering Brits, 929 Mass., and stealing four DVDs on June 11, 2006.

Police apprehended Smith and a companion half a block away with the DVDs in the companion’s possession.

Smith’s case originally appeared in Lawrence Municipal Court, but two previous theft convictions on Smith’s record sent the case to district court.

“We are pleased that the jury had enough confidence in the case we presented to reach its verdict so decisively,” said Charles Branson, Douglas County district attorney, in a statement.

Smith faces up to 17 months in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for April 6.
