Ceremony to honor deaf pitcher at Royals game

Luther Taylor, one of the premier pitchers in the major leagues in the early 1900s and a graduate of the Kansas School for the Deaf, will be honored today at the Kansas City Royals-Chicago White Sox game at Kauffman Stadium.

Taylor has ties to Baldwin City and is buried near there.

The Deaf Cultural Center will hold several events Saturday at the stadium. A ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by Chuck Theel, a teacher at the Kansas School for the Deaf, and caught by Greg Baird, great nephew of Taylor.

The National Anthem and “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” will be sung – and signed. There will be interpreters in the stands and on the field during the game. The Royals will show a 1:30 p.m. presentation on the video board after the first inning.

Taylor pitched for the New York Giants during his major league career. He was instrumental in the development of sign language in baseball. He is buried in Prairie City Cemetery in Baldwin City.
