Astronaut didn’t make cross-country trip wearing diapers, attorney says

? Lisa Nowak’s attorney, Donald Lykkebak, scolded the media Friday for treating his client’s case as entertainment.

“The biggest lie in this preposterous tale that has been told is that my client drove from Houston, Texas, to Orlando, Florida, nonstop, wearing a diaper,” Donald Lykkebak said after filing motions to suppress evidence in Nowak’s criminal case. “That is an absolute fabrication.”

The tidbit that Nowak wore diapers during her trip was written in the police report filed after Nowak’s arrest in February.

“I then asked Mrs. Nowak why she had baby diapers,” according to the charging affidavit written by Officer William “Chris” Becton. “Mrs. Nowak said that she didn’t want to stop and use the restroom, so she used the diapers to collect her urine.”

Diapers were in the car, but they were used years earlier when the family, including Nowak’s children, had to evacuate before a hurricane, Lykkebak said.

He didn’t answer why the diapers were still in the car. He kept saying there were no diapers in evidence.

According to investigative documents, police found two used children’s diapers and a large garbage bag in the back seat of the car. In the trunk, the documents say, the officer found 20 to 30 unused diapers.

He spoke to reporters outside the courtroom after a short status hearing where he submitted two motions to suppress. One was for Nowak’s statement and another was for the search of her car.

He first asked Orange Circuit Court Judge Marc Lubet to review Nowak’s statement and seal them for fear the media would obtain copies.

“They don’t care anything about justice. They don’t care anything about a fair trial,” Lykkebak said during the status hearing.

Lubet didn’t agree to sealing her statements. He told Lykkebak that the contents would come out during a hearing so what was the point.
