Additional hearing set in abduction case
Olathe ? Court officials on Friday scheduled an additional hearing for Edwin R. Hall, the man accused of abducting an 18-year-old woman from a Target store parking lot and strangling her.
The hearing for Hall, 26, of Olathe, was scheduled for July 13 to consider defense motions on evidence, said Brian Burgess, spokesman for Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline.
Hall, who also has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 15 in Johnson County District Court, was charged with premeditated first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in the death of Kelsey Smith.
Hall faces at least 25 years in prison if convicted of the murder charge and more than 12 years on the aggravated kidnapping count. He has been held in the Johnson County jail on $5 million bond.
Smith was abducted from the parking lot in Overland Park about 7 p.m. June 2. Her body was found in a wooded area 20 miles east of the abduction site on June 6.
Judge Peter Ruddick has issued a gag order in the case because of extensive media coverage.
Hall’s lawyer, Paul D. Cramm, filed several motions last week asking that prosecutors turn over all reports regarding DNA evidence and preserve all physical evidence in its original form until the defense can inspect it.
Cramm also asked Ruddick to order all law enforcement agencies in the case to preserve all recorded communications, including radio transmissions among officers, calls to 911 and calls to hot lines such as Crime Stoppers.
He also asked that Hall be allowed to appear in court without restraints.
