Fingerprint used to identify body

Lawrence police on Wednesday released additional details about how investigators identified the decomposed body of John Lundmark, 54, of Lawrence, found June 19 hanging in a shed on rental property near the Kansas University campus.

During the autopsy, investigators in Douglas County Coroner Dr. Erik Mitchell’s office were able to retrieve a fingerprint from the body, said Kim Murphree, a Lawrence police spokeswoman.

Lawrence police detectives were able to pursue information based on items found with the body at the scene. Then Monday night, a man reported a missing friend to police.

“The identity of the missing person corroborated the information from the other two sources,” Murphree said.

Police released Lundmark’s identity Tuesday evening and said he was a resident in an apartment in the 1200 block of Ohio Street across the alley from where his body was found. A resident of the rental property in the 1200 block of Louisiana Street found the body hanging in the shed.

On June 19, officers said it appeared to be a suicide. Police have not yet released the official cause of death, although they do not suspect foul play.
