The Kansas Banking Board approved a charter for a fourth bank in Lawrence – an establishment due to be named the University State Bank, located in the Hillcrest Shopping center to the south of the Sears catalog outlet. Approval of the charter for a 13-man group came after local groups had been turned down in 1965 in bids for federal and state charters. Construction was due to begin soon. John Brand Jr., an attorney and one of the 13 in the group, said, “This is great news and we plan to get moving as soon as we can.”
