Seven firefighter units from area townships joined forces Wednesday evening to stop a house fire in the 1200 block of North 1800 Road.
As smoke billowed out of the white single-story home, its owner, Leslie Blevins, leaned against the side of his garage under the blaring sun. He was the only one in the home when the fire started about 6:30 p.m., and he escaped unharmed.
Wakarusa Township Section 1 Fire Chief Chris Moore said several thousand rounds of ammunition were stored in the spare bedroom and a few exploded before the outbreak of fire.
At 10:30 p.m. the state fire marshal was still on the scene investigating, Moore said.
Kanwaka and Lecompton fire departments also assisted.
