Students competing in national event

Projects by a Lawrence High School graduate and four Central Junior High students are still alive in the National History Day competition this week in College Park, Md.

Final results of the junior and senior categories will be announced between 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. CDT today, and the results can be viewed during a live Web cast at www.historychannel.com/classroom/nhd.

Sam Huneke, one of the 2007 LHS valedictorians, is the only Kansas student who has advanced to the final round in the senior division.

His documentary, “Democracy in the Heart of Europe: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Czechoslovak Republic,” is competing against 13 other students. Michael Ortmann is his teacher.

Central Junior High students Liza Farr, Zoey Limesand, Tess Frydman and Alyson Frydman are competing for best junior group documentary for “Cold Blooded Murder: The Tragedy of the Soweto Uprising; A Triumph Against the South African Apartheid.” Their teacher is Tari Perdue.
