Increased rates for transit system OK’d

Fares for the Lawrence Transit System are set to increase.

Commissioners unanimously approved an increase in fares for both the T and the city’s paratransit system that will double rates by Jan. 1.

The fare increases – the first in the six-year history of the service – will cause one-way fares for the T to increase from 50 cents to 75 cents in the near future, and later to $1. Fares for the paratransit system, which provides door-to-door service for people with disabilities, will increase from $1 to $1.50 and then to $2.

Commissioners heard little opposition to the fare increases from the public. A more controversial proposal to prohibit children under the age of 12 from riding on the T without an adult was tabled for more study by staff.

Commissioners also unanimously approved policy changes detailing the certification process for paratransit system riders.
