Bank robbery suspect nabbed in traffic stop

A man who was arrested Friday night in a Lawrence traffic stop has been charged in U.S. District Court with robbing an Edgerton bank last week.

U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren announced this week he had filed a bank robbery charge against Dale Allen Robertson, 54, who listed an Olathe address when booked into the Douglas County Jail.

Melgren alleges that Robertson pointed a handgun at the stomach of a “visibly pregnant teller” during a robbery June 6 at First Kansas Bank and Trust Co. in Edgerton, which is about 10 miles east of Baldwin City on U.S. Highway 56.

According to an investigator’s affidavit in the case, prosecutors allege that Robertson entered the bank and held a black revolver while he placed a plastic bag on the counter and demanded money. He left the bank on foot and fled in a maroon van parked nearby.

Robertson faces a maximum of 25 years in federal prison if convicted and a fine of up to $250,000.
