Bank robber gets seven-year sentence

James L. Morrison, 47, Kansas City, Kan., was sentenced Monday to seven years in federal prison for his part in robbing a Leavenworth bank. He appeared before U.S. District Judge Kathryn V. Vratil for sentencing in Kansas City, Kan.

Morrison pleaded guilty in February to one count of brandishing a firearm during the Nov. 7 robbery of Mid-American Bank and Trust Company in downtown Leavenworth.

Morrison’s role was to survey the bank, U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren said in a released statement. Morrison exchanged 20 one-dollar bills for two 10-dollar bills and returned to a vehicle parked near the bank, where he told his accomplice what he had seen inside, Melgren said.

Then, according to Morrison’s plea, the accomplice, Kevin Tommie Hall, entered the bank carrying a 12-gauge shotgun and wearing a ski mask. Hall pointed the gun at a teller and demanded money, then returned to the car and drove away with Morrison in the passenger seat, according to the plea.

When police began to chase them, Morrison said he and Hall threw the shotgun and most of the stolen money from the car before they were stopped and arrested.

Hall’s jury trial is set for July 31.
