Two men were injured when their cars collided at 11:25 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of Iowa Street, Lawrence police said.

Lucas Schimmel, 25, and Luis Salas, 21, both of Lawrence, were flown by air ambulance to Kansas City-area hospitals. Salas underwent surgery Tuesday at Overland Park Regional Medical Center and was later released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said Schimmel was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., but the hospital said it had no record of anyone by that name.

Police said Schimmel was driving north in a green Camaro when it went out of control and slid into Salas’ southbound silver Camaro.

Witnesses told police that Schimmel may have been racing the driver of a red Ford Mustang that left the area after the crash.
