Help needed for Take Back the Night event

Women’s Transitional Care Services needs volunteers to help with Take Back the Night on Oct. 4. The event takes a stand against violence and abuse in the community.

Planning meetings will be every second and fourth Thursday through September at the United Way of Douglas County office, 2518 Ridge Court. Meetings start at 6 p.m. and usually last about two hours.

Immediate volunteer needs

¢ Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park needs several volunteers to staff the historic site from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, maintain the Web site, help with landscaping and basic property maintenance of the park, and help with outreach. ¢ Lawrence Community Theatre is looking for people to help both on stage and offstage during productions.

Volunteers on stage can work as actors and crew members handling props, costumes, set construction, lights and sound. Volunteers offstage can help as house managers, ushers, box office attendants and bartenders. Volunteers also are needed to help in the business office for a variety of tasks from taking ticket reservations to filing, photocopying and other general office tasks.

¢ The Farm Inc. Family Services Visitation and Exchange Center seeks volunteers to supervise visits and exchanges between children and their parents. Volunteers can set their own schedules, with a commitment of one hour per month. Volunteers will work with other volunteers, staff and law enforcement. ¢ Centro Hispano Resource Center seeks volunteers to continue instruction of two English as a Second Language classes. Volunteers will work with a fun and enthusiastic group of Spanish-speaking adults from the community.

The classes take place every Monday night and Wednesday morning at United Way offices, 2518 Ridge Court, and will continue into September. Previous training and experience teaching ESL is preferred.

¢ Heart of America Hospice is in need of volunteers to visit patients in their homes or in local nursing homes. Volunteers can provide vital support to individuals and their families through simple acts of kindness, a phone call, sending a card, baking cookies, mowing the grass, sharing a story or simply listening and holding a hand.
