Injury accidents
¢ An Overbrook woman was injured in a single-vehicle wreck Monday on U.S. Highway 56. Nancy Varner, 55, was driving a 2001 Ford Focus west on U.S. 56 about 1.5 miles west of U.S. Highway 59 when she swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and lost control of the car, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The car moved into the north ditch, struck a tree and caught on fire. Varner was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released. She was wearing a seat belt during the wreck.
Law enforcement report
¢ Lawrence police are investigating a possible aggravated battery that occurred at 1:44 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of New Hampshire Street. The officer who responded to the call observed a laceration on the hand of the victim, a Topeka man, and called Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical crews to the scene.
The victim, who refused treatment, said he had been standing on the west side of the second floor at Last Call when another victim, a 28-year-old man, was struck in the head with a bottle. Fire and medical personnel found the second victim and treated his injuries. No arrests have been made in the incident.
¢ A 16-year-old Olathe boy involved in a wreck around 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Douglas County roads 1061 and 900, four miles south of Eudora, has been treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and released, according to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office official. The boy was traveling west on North 900 Road in a Plymouth Voyager when a 58-year-old Eudora woman, traveling on 1061, struck his vehicle with her Honda Accord. It is unknown whether she was injured in the wreck.
¢ A 40-year-old Lawrence man arrested Saturday night on charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and criminal possession of a firearm appeared Monday in court for the firearm charge only. The rape allegations are still under review, according to Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson.
Burglaries and thefts reported
¢ At 2:31 a.m. Monday, Lawrence Police were called to the 700 block of Eagle Pass Drive for a burglary in progress. A neighbor was out walking his dog and noticed juvenile males in the area. One of the juveniles was coming out of a neighbor’s garage carrying golf clubs. The neighbor chased the suspect and ordered him to drop the clubs. He did so and ran off. The victim, who told police he had left his garage door open for ventilation, also noticed he was missing a case of CDs. The suspects were not located.
¢ A 50-year-old Lawrence man reported the theft of money and electronic equipment totaling more than $5,100 around 3 p.m. Friday from Hallmark Cards, 101 McDonald Drive. The man reported the following items stolen: about $74 in cash, two Dell laptop computers each valued at $1,500, and digital video and camera equipment.
