Despite all-nighter, state still lacks budget

? Bleary-eyed legislators failed to reach a deal on the overdue state budget Saturday after Senate Republicans refused to support the spending plan, despite being locked in the chamber all night by the Democratic leader.

Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata finally allowed senators to leave shortly before 10 a.m. when it became clear he could not get two Republicans – in addition to the Democratic majority – needed to approve the $145 billion proposed budget. Lawmakers have been at odds as to whether they should cut a tiny portion of the budget.

Perata irritably told his Republican counterpart, Dick Ackerman, to come up with his own spending plan by Wednesday morning when the Senate reconvenes.

“We have no freakin’ idea where you want to go,” Perata, of Oakland, told the lawmaker on the Senate floor.
