Prisoner sentenced to 10 years for break-in

A 31-year-old Lawrence man already serving a prison sentence received an additional 10 years Friday for a break-in he committed on Elm Street last year.

Richard E. Elston Jr. was convicted in Douglas County District Court on June 6 of felony aggravated burglary, misdemeanor criminal use of a financial card and two counts of misdemeanor theft related to the Nov. 23 burglary in which he stole the victim’s purse and Palm Pilot, then used her debit card to withdraw money from her bank account.

The 130 months that Elston will serve in prison will run consecutively with the sentence he is currently serving. Elston was convicted earlier this year of one count of felony burglary of a dwelling and one count of misdemeanor theft; in another case he pleaded guilty to attempted use of a financial card.

For his previous convictions, he is serving a 32-month sentence and a 13-month sentence.
