Touring quilt exhibit features native artists

“Native Threads,” a touring quilt exhibit showcasing the native artistry of Kansas American Indian quilters, will be presented in six venues statewide, the Kansas Arts Commission has announced.

The exhibit of 12 quilts was curated by Joni Murphy, of Pomona, a faculty member of Haskell Indian Nations University. The selected artists are all affiliated with Haskell. They are Kepsey Fixico, Marilyn Thunder Hawk, Melanie Jones, Mildred (Fox) Jordt and Olivia Putesoy Kissoon.

The exhibit will be shown at Haskell from Sept. 1 to Oct. 5. The other Kansas sites are Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri Tribal Museum in Reserve; Miami County Swan River Museum, Paola; Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum, Arkansas; Carnegie Arts Center, Leavenworth; and Wyandotte County Historical Society & Museum, Bonner Springs.
