Boy, 10, gets juvenile detention in beating

? A 10-year-old boy will spend at least six months in a juvenile detention facility for his role in the cinderblock beating of a homeless veteran.

The boy named Drew, who appeared in court Friday wearing baggy denim shorts and a blue T-shirt, was also ordered by Judge John W. Watson to get mental health counseling.

Drew pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge in the March 27 attack on transient John D’Amico. Prosecutors say Drew, another 10-year-old and their 17-year-old friend hurled rocks at D’Amico, pushed him through a brick wall and smashed a cinderblock into the side of his face.

The other 10-year-old, Jordan, was convicted of felony aggravated battery and was ordered last month to remain indefinitely in a high-risk detention facility and receive intensive mental health counseling.

Drew’s sentence is much lighter because he made a deal with prosecutors and agreed to testify against his friends.

Jeremy Woods, 17, is scheduled to face a trial in adult court next month for his role in the attack.
