After attacks, police kill sword-wielding teen

? Josh Gilchrist killed his mother with a sword, and when he turned his weapon on police, they had no choice but to fire back, said officials in this east-central South Dakota town.

Officers called to the Gilchrist home Friday found 14-year-old Rebekah Gilchrist with several cuts on her lower arms and hands. The officers then spotted her brother swinging a long sword, officials said.

The boy apparently struck one of the officers several times before the others fired several shots, killing him.

Police then found the body of the boy’s mother, 49-year-old Betty Gilchrist, and an injured foreign exchange student.

Police find sex offender suspected of kidnapping

The man suspected of kidnapping a 6-year-old girl in Arizona was arrested Saturday.

The registered sex offender, George Richard Horner, was found in the nearby town of Coolidge, sheriff’s spokesman Mike Minter said.

Horner was taken into custody without incident and was being questioned by detectives, Minter said.

The girl was reported missing from her mother’s home in Maricopa and found about three hours later walking down a rural road in the town of Casa Grande, about 20 miles away, officials said. Sheriff Christopher Vasquez said there was evidence that she had been sexually molested.

The victim’s mother described Horner as a friend of a friend, and said she would not have let him within a “hundred million miles” of her house if she had known he was a registered sex offender.
