‘Gorgeous George’ senator dies at 93
Miami ? Former U.S. Sen. George A. Smathers has died. He was 93.
The Democrat, who served two terms in the U.S. House and three in the Senate, suffered a stroke Monday, said his son, Bruce. He lived in Indian Creek Village, an exclusive island community outside Miami.
Smathers came to Capitol Hill in the late 1940s along with John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. He used his more than two decades in Washington to focus on international issues and fight the spread of Communism. He supported voting rights for blacks but voted against major civil rights bills. His dashing appearance and tailored suits won him the nickname “Gorgeous George.” He left office in 1969 and lived in the Miami area.
