Wife, daughter of ‘Crocodile Hunter’ discuss wildlife work

Washington – Bindi Irwin is ready to continue her famous father’s work spreading the wonder of wildlife.

“I’m going to become a wildlife warrior just like he was,” 8-year-old Bindi, daughter of the late Steve Irwin, told an audience Friday at Washington’s National Press Club.

Five months after Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray, Bindi and her mother, Terri, are touring the U.S. to promote Bindi’s upcoming television series.

Asked Friday if the attention was too much too soon, Terri said that Bindi told her after Steve’s death that she wanted to get back to filming as soon as possible.

“Grief is a road that each individual travels in their own way,” Terri said, her daughter by her side. “For us to get right back up and be able to say that Steve’s work counted for something” has been a help to the Irwin family and others.

Steve Irwin was killed in September after a stingray’s barb stabbed him in the chest while filming a documentary.

Soon-to-retire Bob Barker shares secret to success

Pasadena, Calif. – The man with a golden voice who gave away warehouses of refrigerators and sofas during his 35 years as host of “The Price Is Right” says the secret to a good game-show host is the ability to listen.

Too many are thinking of what they should say next instead of picking up on what the contestants are telling them, said the soon-to-retire Bob Barker.

“These people are little gems with which you can create laughter and good times,” Barker told TV critics Thursday.

Barker, who turned 83 in December, said he wanted to retire “while I’m still young,” and credits his vegetarian diet for his good health. He had a different answer when asked how he’s able to maintain his energy.

“Booze,” he said to a laugh.

His last taping of CBS Corp.’s CBS network show is June 6, with the swan song to air soon after. Reruns will be used until a new season starts in September.

Ex-POW Lynch has baby girl; names baby for fallen comrade

Parkersburg, W.Va. – Former POW Jessica Lynch became a mother on Friday, giving birth to a girl whom she named in honor of a fallen comrade.

Dakota Ann Robinson was delivered by Caesarean section at 5:10 p.m. The infant weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces, said Lynch’s publicist, Aly Goodwin Gregg.

Lynch and her boyfriend, Wes Robinson, named Dakota in honor of Lynch’s friend, Army Spc. Lori Piestewa, of Tuba City, Ariz., who was the first woman to be killed in combat in Iraq. Piestewa’s middle name was Dakota, which means friendship or ally, Gregg said.

Lynch and Piestewa served together in the 507th Maintenance Company from Fort Bliss, Texas. Piestewa died and Lynch was captured when their unit was ambushed on March 23, 2003.
