Local sketch comedy ensemble presents ‘Year in Review’ shows

While 2006 was characterized by war, scandals and political upheaval, one group thought the year was actually quite funny.

Lawrence-based comedy troupe Right Between the Ears will present its annual Year in Review show on Saturday.

“We go back and look at the scripts, look at the topical material and the stuff that worked the best,” says Darrell Brogdon, producer and principal writer of RBTE.

“It’s kind of an ‘American Idol’ thing because we’re letting the audience decide what we’re going to do. Whatever they laughed at in 2006 is what we’ll be doing … so it might only be a 15-minute show.”

Among the highlights to be revisited by Right Between the Ears:

¢ Dick Cheney’s “rifle malfunction”

¢ The Duke lacrosse team and skier Bode Miller.

¢ Popeye eats tainted spinach

¢ TV’s Nancy Grace

¢ Britney Spears unveils her new fragrance: Stupid

¢ Pluto gets fired (the planet, not the cartoon character)

¢ Televangelist Pat Robertson plugs his new vitamin supplement: Jehovatol

¢ Spoofs of “Brokeback Mountain” and “Snakes On a Plane”

Originally formed in 1982 as The Imagination Workshop, the troupe’s current cast includes David Greusel, John Jessup, Andi Meyer, Kip Niven, Roberta Solomon, Rick Tamblyn and Teri Wilder.

Right Between the Ears is broadcast every week on Sirius Satellite Radio, Kansas Public Radio and KCMO AM-710.
