Library needs
To the editor:
If the City Commission is currently considering a $30 million enlarged downtown library facility (not necessarily on the land currently occupied by the Lawrence Public Library), I believe that they should stop and consider the real needs of the people of Lawrence.
The population of Lawrence has doubled since the present downtown library was built in the 1970s. Boulder, Colo., which is about the same size as Lawrence, has now added two satellite libraries to its downtown library. For public convenience, Lawrence should have at least two satellite libraries. These satellite libraries could specialize in books for children and teenagers. Upon request, any book could be sent from the main downtown library to a satellite library.
Assuming that the two satellite libraries cost $3 million each, $24 million would remain for building a larger new downtown library with adequate parking.
