Pelosi enacts smoking ban
Smoking is snuffed in the Speaker’s Lobby.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced a smoking ban Wednesday, effective immediately, in the ornate Speaker’s Lobby just off the House floor.
“The days of smoke-filled rooms in the United States Capitol are over,” Pelosi said. “Medical science has unquestionably established the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke, including an increased risk of cancer and respiratory diseases. I am a firm believer that Congress should lead by example.”
Pelosi’s prohibition follows a recent law against lighting up in public places in Washington.
Smoking was already banned in other public spaces on Capitol Hill.
Nicotine-addicted congressmen can still smoke in their offices, but for a quick fix between votes, they’ll have to go out on the balcony off the Speaker’s Lobby and light up in the cold.
Some wags saw the ban as a shot at House Republican leader and power smoker John Boehner of Ohio. Asked about it as he left a meeting, he muttered, “That’s fine.”
