Bathroom fire causes evacuation of CJHS

Central Junior High School was evacuated during the noon hour Monday when a fire was discovered in a first-floor girl’s bathroom.

“Somebody set a toilet paper dispenser on fire in one of the stalls,” said Julie Boyle, communications director for Lawrence public schools.

Boyle said the fire, which was discovered about 12:30 p.m. Monday, was extinguished by the school’s staff.

“There was some smoke damage in the partition of the restroom stall and it damaged the dispenser,” Boyle said.

She said the district didn’t yet have a damage estimate.

Lawrence firefighters and school officials are investigating the cause, she said.
