Spencer Consort to perform in Topeka

The Spencer Consort will perform a program Friday titled “George Frideric Handel and the Flute” at Grace Cathedral in downtown Topeka.

The consort is a resident ensemble at Kansas University’s Spencer Museum of Art, performing there once each semester since 1998. The musicians of the ensemble play on instruments like those in use during the Baroque period, and they play and sing with techniques and interpretive ideals known or thought to have been in use during that period.

Spencer Consort members performing at the Cathedral include Elizabeth Egbert Berghout, harpsichord; John Boulton, Baroque flute and recorder; Joy Laird, Baroque flute and recorder; Paul Laird, Baroque cello; and Katrina Mitchell, Mezzo-soprano.

The performance will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the cathedral, 701 SW Eighth Ave. A freewill offering will be received, but admission is free.

A reception will follow the hourlong event.
