Sutherland sentenced for drunken driving

Los Angeles – Kiefer Sutherland was sentenced Wednesday to 48 days in jail for racking up a second drunken-driving arrest in three years and immediately reported to a city lockup.

The star of the Fox TV drama “24” was being processed at the Glendale city jail, said Officer John Balian.

Sutherland, 40, who pleaded no contest in October to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of .08, appeared in court with his attorney and politely answered the judge’s questions, said Assistant City Attorney Dan Jeffries.

Sutherland was ordered to complete the sentence by March 30, Jeffries said.

“Kiefer made the decision to surrender to custody immediately,” his attorney, Blair Berk, told The Associated Press.

The actor was already on probation for a 2004 drunken-driving arrest when he was stopped by police as he left a Hollywood industry party at the trendy Area nightclub on Sept. 25. Authorities said he failed a field sobriety test after being pulled over for making an illegal U-turn.

Sutherland had also pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge in 2004.

Child abuse, neglect by Spears investigated

Los Angeles – Child welfare investigators are looking into “multiple child abuse and neglect” allegations in the custody battle between Britney Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline, according to court documents released Tuesday.

In a request to unseal parts of the case file, an attorney for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services wrote that there are concerns about the safety and welfare of the two toddlers, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, if they are left in their mother’s care. The documents don’t provide details.

The agency requested the court not alter the current custody and visitation arrangements until their investigation is completed. Federline has temporary custody of the boys after Spears defied court orders about regular drug testing.

Cosmetics company sues Teri Hatcher

Los Angeles – Teri Hatcher is being told to pucker up and pay $2.4 million to a skin-care products company that says she promoted the wrong lip gloss.

Hydroderm’s lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, claims that a 2005 agreement with ISBE Productions, Hatcher’s production company, stipulated the star of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” wouldn’t endorse other competing products as part of a $2.4 million endorsement deal.

According to the lawsuit, the company learned last summer that Hatcher was also promoting CityLips, a lip plumper made by City Cosmetics that competes with Hydroderm’s lip plumper, called Volumizing Lip Serum.

The lawsuit also alleges that Hatcher, 42, promoted other products, but doesn’t name them. “Hatcher’s name, image and likeness have been linked to so many competitors’ products (at least 17!) that it is anyone’s guess as to what product keeps her skin and lips youthful,” the lawsuit said.

In a statement, Hatcher attorney Alan Wertheimer called the lawsuit an “unjustified and public assault on Teri Hatcher’s good name, reputation and celebrity in a transparent and pathetic effort to distract from its own failure to live up to its end of the agreement.”

Wertheimer said Hatcher complied with all of her contractual obligations despite “a frustrating series of changes in the ownership and management of Hydroderm over the last several years.”

Jenna Bush calls folks from talk show

New York – Jenna Bush, phone home.

The first daughter appeared nervous when Ellen DeGeneres asked her to call her parents during a taping of DeGeneres’ talk show Tuesday. The show aired Wednesday.

“They’re going to kill me,” the 26-year-old told DeGeneres. “I’m going to be in so much trouble.”

“No, they’re going to be thrilled,” DeGeneres said. “Why wouldn’t they want to say ‘hi’ to everybody and say Merry Christmas?”

“They may have wanted some warning,” responded Bush, who was on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to promote her new book, “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope.”

All was well, though, when she reached her parents on speakerphone.

“I’m just sitting here with daddy,” Laura Bush told her daughter, to which DeGeneres chimed in: “Oh hey! It’s Ellen. I wanted to say hi to daddy.”

So George Bush got on the line: “How’s my little girl doing?”

“Oh, she’s great. She’s scared she’s going to get in trouble because I just said, ‘Is it easy to just pick up the phone and call your dad anytime?”‘ DeGeneres said. “And now she’s scared she’s not going to get any Christmas presents.”

Bush said he wasn’t angry. “I do want to say Merry Christmas to your audience, and I want to tell my little girl I love her,” he said.

Jodie Foster given leadership award

Beverly Hills, Calif. – Despite being the guest of honor at the Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Power 100 breakfast, Jodie Foster said, “I don’t feel very powerful.”

“I feel fragile … unsure, struggling to figure it all out,” the 45-year-old actress-director-producer said Tuesday as she accepted the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award.

Foster characterized herself as a “professional” and a “gentleman.” But she also said that after working in entertainment for 42 years, “there’s no way you can do that and not be as nutty as a fruitcake.”

“I always feel like something of an impostor. I don’t know what I’m doing,” she said. “I suppose that’s my one little secret, the secret of my success.”
