Boise, Idaho Sen. Larry Craig says he's innocent despite pleading guilty and sorry for any embarrassment.
"I am not gay. I never have been gay," the Idaho Republican said Tuesday in his first public appearance since disclosure of his arrest in June by an undercover police officer in a Minneapolis airport men's room.
Craig, a third-term senator from Idaho, proclaimed his innocence as well as his sexuality less than an hour after Senate leaders from his own Republican Party called for an ethics committee review of his case.
"This is a serious matter," they said in Washington in a written statement that offered neither support nor criticism of the conservative senator. Issued in the names of Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the party leader, and several others, the statement said they were examining "other aspects of the case to determine if additional action is required."
Craig, his wife, Suzanne, at his side, took no questions in a brief appearance in the capital city of the state he has represented in Congress for more than two decades in the House and then the Senate.
He had "overreacted and made a poor decision" when he was apprehended by an undercover police officer in a men's room at the Minneapolis airport and later pleaded guilty.
"While I was not involved in any inappropriate conduct in the Minneapolis Airport or anywhere else, I chose to plead guilty to a lesser charge in hopes of making it go away." He said he kept the information from his friends, family and staff, adding, "I wasn't eager to share this failure but I should have anyway because I am not gay."
Nor did he hire a lawyer, Craig said, although he now has retained counsel "to review the matter and advise me on how to proceed."
"I have brought a cloud over Idaho and for that I seek and ask the people of Idaho to forgive me," he said.
His account contrasted sharply with the complaint in the case, in which an undercover officer said that Craig, occupying a stall in the men's room, engaged in actions "often used by persons communicating a desire to engage in sexual conduct."
Craig was read his rights, fingerprinted and required to submit to a mug shot at the time of his arrest.
Police notes also show that on June 22, 11 days after the arrest, Craig returned to the police station and said no one had yet contacted him about his case. "Craig told me that he needs a contact so his lawyer can speak to someone," wrote the officer who spoke with the senator, Adam Snedker.
The senator signed and dated his guilty plea to a charge of disorderly conduct on Aug. 1, and court papers indicate it was submitted by mail and filed a week later. The court docket said Craig paid $575 in fines and fees and was put on unsupervised probation for a year. A sentence of 10 days in the county workhouse was stayed.
Craig, up for re-election next year, said he would announce his plans next month. If anything, he sounded like a man inclined to seek six more years in the Senate.
"Over the years, I have accomplished a lot for Idaho, and I hope Idahoans will allow me to continue to do that," he said.
Regardless of Craig's plans, it was clear his political standing had suffered.
On Monday, he resigned from a prominent role with Republican Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.
Another Republican running for president, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, distanced himself from Craig and his guilty plea. "It's disgraceful," McCain told host Jay Leno during a taping of NBC's "The Tonight Show" for broadcast Tuesday night. "It harms our reputation with the American people."
Craig, 62, has faced rumors about his sexuality since the 1980s, but allegations that he had engaged in gay sex have never been substantiated. He has denied the assertions.

The question isn't whether he is gay but was he behaving lewdly in the bathroom... lewdness knows no sexual orientation.

I coiuldn't care less what the NYT says. I also couldn't care less whether he is gay.
What I am curious about is what he actually did that was intrepreted as a sigh that he wanted to have gay sex. I've been using men's rooms my whole life and have no idea. On the radio it says that he tapped his foot or somehting like that. I will now make certian that my feet are planted well on the ground from now on.........

He's obviously gay, but I don't see how the charges will stick. Did he actually say anything to the undercover cop or did he merely tap his feet and put his hand under the divider? Will he be embraced by the gay community since he is "one of them" so to speak?

Actually, the rumors have been around for a long time, but for right_thinker to insinuate that it has been "swirling on the frothy left" is obviously disingenuous, as almost no one knows about earlier accusations--it was all mostly "inside the beltway" chatter.
Back in the early 80's before he was married, he had to defend his sexuality, then again in 2004 (I think), it was rumored that he solicited a man in a restroom in Union Station in D.C., blocks from his Senate office. The information has been obviously well protected, as we didn't find out about this June incident for 2 months, even after the man had plead guilty to the offending behavior. It must be that liberal media...

I guarantee that there are homosexuals of every race and creed. We'll see what happens in thirty years. The republicans will be the gay party and the democrats will be battling with them to see who can be the most homosexual-friendly. Well... It's funny that all of this keeps happening to the "family values" party. First you have Mark Foley (sending inappropriate sexual emails to male interns), Bob Allen (soliciting gay sex from an undercover officer), David Vitter (the D.C. madam scandal) and now Larry Craig (soliciting gay sex from a police officer). Hell, even Tom Delay and Newt Gingrich openly admit to commiting adultry. How can the Republicans ever use Monica Lewinsky against Bill Clinton again? According to their evangelical supported rules, Clinton was actually less sinful by having sex with a woman and not paying for it. Then again, we know evangelicals can't even follow their own rules, just ask staunch Bush supporter Rev. Ted Haggard.

- Gerry Eastman Studds - Democrat - U.S. Representative from Massachusetts from 1973 to 1997. The first openly gay member of Congress. Censured by the House of Representatives for having sexual relations with a teenage House page.

Wow, the right-wingers on this thread are well versed in Bill O'Reilly-caliber spin. People like Kneejerk don't quite understand the irony that makes this situation interesting. Lately, members of the Republican party, a party that claims to promote "family values" while eagerly pointing to the "immorality" of the Demorcrats, seem to be incapable of "practicing what they preach". They vote down gay marraige but troll public bathrooms for sex from men, which is illegal, and according to their own moral ramblings, against everything they and their party stand for. No one said Dems are better people, they just don't seem to be as hypocritical lately. Let Ann Coulter defend these acts. Stop the b.s. fighting guys. Good lord!
There are just a few basic things to this story that everyone should understand and then it's a closed case.
Craig solicited sex in a public bathroom. If anyone had taken a moment to look some stuff up on the real subject, they would have learned that there is a common tap done in "known" public restrooms that are frequented by gay prostitutes. Craig didn't just go in and tap his feet while taking a dump. If the person in the other stall returns this known tap, then the transaction can begin. The police were doing this sting operation because of the prostitution that was happening at the airport and people had been complaining about it. Considering that Craig would have probably flown NW (hub is Minneapolis) when going home, he was quite aware of the airport and the gay prostitution that happened in that one specific mens bathroom there. He was probably getting a hummer every time he had a lay over (ha ha) at that airport.
He plead guilty to lesser charges, in hopes no one would find out about the incident.
He is a hypocrit because he lead the impeachment b.s. against Clinton and is a known family values republican.
I don't give a rats ass who anyone does, as long as they are a consenting adult. What I care about is a hypocrital elected leader that preaches family values, but lives a secret life that is just the opposite of what he supposedly stands for.
Take the republican, democrat crap out of this and look at the facts. This guy is a closeted creep that has broken the law and is now proven to be a hypocrit. Why anyone would defend him and want him to remain in office is beyond me.
Wouldn't it have just been easier to come out of the closet and have a normal date instead of trying to get a gay prostitute to blow you in a nasty airport bathroom?

Soros-linked group hit with huge fine

The Federal Election Commission has fined one of the last cycle's biggest liberal political action committees $775,000 for using unregulated soft money to boost John Kerry and other Democratic candidates during the 2004 elections.
America Coming Together (ACT) raised $137 million for its get-out-the-vote effort in 2004, but the FEC found most of that cash came through contributions that violated federal limits.
The group's big donors included George Soros, Progressive Corp. chairman Peter Lewis and the Service Employees International Union.
The settlement, which the FEC approved unanimously, is the third largest enforcement penalty in the commission's 33-year history.

Scenebooster, I think you are saying that the reason there are more sex scandals reported about Republicans than Democrats is because the media don't report Democrats' sexual antics. Why? Back in the old days you could call Sears and order a refrigerator on the phone. I had a teacher living up the street and it was the biggest thrill in the world to just call and order a refrigerator and watch Sears deliver it to an unsuspecting teacher and his wife, and far stranger things than that. But we always picked out adults that we just thought were odd or weird, and it would be fun to make fun of them, and I don't think kids today are any different:
But you know as well as I do that some folks make fun of gay people. They make fun of the way they talk; they make fun of the way some of them walk and so forth. Who knows what the word around town about fellow Craig was. Who knows? We all know that some folks gay bash. Some people do a lot of stuff. They don't have the maturity to understand this kind of stuff:
I tell you, folks, you've got this misguided police officer out there; you probably have a bunch of officers laughing and making fun of Craig and the way he acts in the bathroom, and he's gay and so forth, so they egg him on and so forth:.
These undercover police officers... they have a hard life. They sometimes have to spend months or even years, maybe going into "deep cover" to pretend to be someone they're not. Other times, they may be plagued by long stretches of boredom, with nobody to talk to except maybe the dispatcher. What if this officer was just... well... bored? Maybe he and his dispatcher thought, "Well, let's just have a little fun here. This guy in the bathroom *looks* gay... he's a prominent legislator. The country needs a good scandal--why don't we give it to 'em? I'll just step up to the urinal, right next to him, turn a little in his direction when I break out the ol' block & tackle... just tempt him, just as a joke, a harmless prank...
I mean... what if this is all just some police officer prank gone awry?

My hypothesis is that it would be higher in the former.

No one said hypocrisy is a crime.
Craig was arrested on June 11 for disorderly conduct.
"The senator signed and dated his guilty plea to a charge of disorderly conduct on Aug. 1, and court papers indicate it was submitted by mail and filed a week later."
He had nearly two months to consider his options and consult a lawyer.
It is reasonable that people find his later claim of innocence to be absurd and annoying. It is also reasonable that people accept his guilty plea at face value, and thus assume that he was interested in enjoying a homosexual encounter, and are further annoyed by the hypocrisy inherent in his support of legislation that makes life more difficult for gays and lesbians.

What was Craig's crime?
...........
From the arrest report, here's what Craig allegedly did: (1) put a duffel bag at the front of his stall; (2) peered through a crack into an adjoining stall; (3) tapped his foot; (4) moved his shoe over until it touched an officer's; and (5) ran his fingers along the underside of the stall divider. That's it.
Given the long history of police fabrication of evidence and entrapment of gay men in these sting operations, there should be no presumption that the officer's version of events is correct. But assuming for the sake of argument that Craig did everything the officer alleged, how was it the basis for a criminal charge that could get him a $1,000 fine and/or ten days in jail?
Disorderly conduct is a notoriously nebulous crime, allowing police wide discretion in making arrests and charges for conduct or speech that is little more than bothersome to police or to others. The "disorderly conduct" statute to which Craig pleaded guilty provides that one who knowingly "[e]ngages in offensive, obscene, abusive, boisterous, or noisy conduct or in offensive, obscene, or abusive language tending reasonably to arouse alarm, anger, or resentment in others" is guilty of the misdemeanor of disorderly conduct. ...
More specific criminal charges were not advanced. ::
Craig's conduct was not obscene, abusive, boisterous, or noisy. The officer might have considered Craig's actions "offensive . . . conduct tending reasonably to arouse alarm, anger, or resentment in others." But if that's so, it seems a pretty thin basis for charging him. ::.A continuation of the unwelcome behavior might then have been enough to charge him with something, but again, that didn't happen. In fact, the officer tapped his own foot in response, indicating the interest was mutual.
::::..
What really seems to have happened is that the airport police had received complaints about sexual activity and were acting over-zealously to deter it, regardless of the niceties of state criminal law. ::..
update: Professor Ted Sampsell-Jones (William Mitchell), who has far more knowledge than I of Minnesota criminal law, writes:
Minn. Stat. 617.23, the indecent exposure statute, covers lewd or lascivious conduct in a public place. Sex and masturbation count as lewd and lascivious acts. There is, however, some Minnesota case law suggesting that public restrooms aren't "public places" once you close the door to your stall. State v. Bryant, 177 N.W.2d 800, 803-04 (Minn. 1970).
Even if the completed act would be a crime, it's doubtful that merely asking for sex in the restroom would be a crime::::.

Clinton would have a valid point, Arminius. Nice try, you partisan fink.

Here's a question - Where was the Republican outrage when Vitter admitted to seeing that prostitute? Is it because Vitter's indiscretions had to do with heterosexual sex, while Craig's alleged indiscretion was homosexual in nature? Is the backlash towards Craig an indication of the Republican's true feelings toward homosexuals - that they should be ashamed of themselves and their lifestyle, as they seemed to give Vitter a pass?

The Publicans threw Craig to the wolves - two months after he was arrested - to take the spotlight off the Gonzales resignation.
