Law enforcement report

¢ Lawrence police arrested two men, neither from Lawrence, Sunday on charges related to a spree involving stolen gumball machines.

Police spokesman Sgt. Damon Thomas said the two suspects were prying open the backs of the machines and taking the money. Then they would exchange the damaged machine for a new one at a different business, Thomas said.

A clerk at Best Value Hallmark Inn, 730 Iowa, recognized one of the participants and called police about 3 p.m. Thomas said officers believe the men went to four other businesses: La Mexicana Supermercado, 1420 W. 23rd St.; Copy Co. 1401 W. 23rd St.; Bargain Depot, 1547 E. 23rd St.; and, Panda Garden, 1500 W. Sixth St.

An unknown amount of money was taken.

¢ A woman suffered a minor injury just before midnight Sunday after she was struck by a vehicle near Ninth and Tennessee streets, said Sgt. Richard Nickell, a police spokesman.

Nickell said the woman refused an ambulance, but she was taken in a police car to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for an evaluation because officers believed she was intoxicated. The accident did not appear to be the driver’s fault, Nickell said.
