Season highlights

AUGUST

‘Pageant’

The young ladies in the Kansas University Theatre production of “Pageant” aren’t ladies at all. They’re guys in wigs. Talented, hilarious, darn sexy guys in wigs. Co-written by Bill Russell, a 1970s KU alumnus who lives in New York, the musical centers on six contestants vying for the title of Miss Glamouresse. Russell directed a KU production of the show this summer that was so popular – all six performances sold out – it will return for an encore Aug. 30-Sept. 1 on Stage Too! in Murphy Hall.

SEPTEMBER

‘Thresholds’ at 6 Gallery

After a slew of gallery closings the past few years, a new art venue opens this fall with a marquee lineup of local artists. Lawrence artist Sally Piller has nestled 6 Gallery in the former home of Richard’s Music, 716 1/2 Mass. (owned by her husband who, ironically, moved his music shop to the space vacated by the defunct Olive Gallery). The inaugural exhibition will feature works representing artists’ approach to the world “Thresholds.” Among the participants will be Hong Zhang, Judith McCrea, Lisa Grossman, Stephen Johnson and Justin Marable. The show opens with a reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 7 and remains on view through Oct. 19.

‘Aaron Douglas: African American Modernist’

Eight years in the making, the Spencer Museum of Art unveils its Aaron Douglas exhibition this fall. “Aaron Douglas: African American Modernist” is the first nationally touring retrospective to celebrate the art and legacy of Douglas, a Kansas native considered the foremost visual artist of the Harlem Renaissance. In paintings, murals and book illustrations, he combined angular Cubist rhythms and seductive Art Deco dynamism with traditional African and African-American imagery to develop a radically new visual vocabulary. The exhibit will include more than 90 pieces; a book, public programs and a national conference coincide with the show, which opens with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 28 and runs through Dec. 2 in the Kress Gallery and South Balcony at the museum, 1301 Miss.

OCTOBER

River City Reading Festival

The River City Reading Festival program reads like a who’s who of Kansas authors – or at least authors who grew up in the state or write about it. Thomas Fox Averill. Steven Church. Brad Sneed. Richard Jennings. Readings will take place every 30 minutes. There also will be stories, workshops and crafts for children, as well as sessions on writing, publishing and book conservation for adults. Headlining the event will be Jim Lehrer, a Wichita native and host of “The NewsHour” on PBS. His newest book, “Eureka,” set in a fictional Kansas town of the same name, will be released in October. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

‘Hairspray’

Hot on the trail of the summer release of the popular film “Hairspray,” the stage version buzzes into the Lied Center straight from the Broadway beehive. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart has only one dream: to dance. Can Tracy Turnblad vanquish the local TV dance show’s reigning princess, win the heart of hunky Link Larkin and racially integrate a television show? Find out in John Waters’ cult classic at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive.

NOVEMBER

Murphy Hall 50th Anniversary

A big celebration is in the works to mark the golden anniversary of Kansas University’s Murphy Hall, which houses the School of Fine Arts and University Theatre. The performing arts hub is named after Franklin D. Murphy, KU’s chancellor from 1951 to 1960, who promoted arts locally, regionally and nationally. The bulk of the anniversary events will be in November and April. Highlights include performances of “The Music Man”; a national symposium on Broadway musicals; and a two-week Festival of the Arts celebration that will include theater, music and dance performances. The building will be rededicated during a ceremony at 5 p.m. Nov. 10 – 50 years to the day of its first dedication.

DECEMBER

‘Home for the Holidays’

The Lawrence Chamber Orchestra is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Stocked with professional musicians from Lawrence and nearby towns, the ensemble focuses primarily on baroque and classical but also has premiered newly composed chamber orchestra music. What began as “Twas the Night Before the Night Before” on the chilly night of Dec. 23, 2004, has become the group’s warm and cozy holiday benefit concert, featuring the orchestra and guest artists. The concert is set for 2 p.m. Dec. 23 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.
