Book proves even a city girl can survive – and like – camping

The idea of being without a Starbucks in a two-block radius makes you a little uncomfortable. Sleeping under the stars has never been your thing (unless you count those glow-in-the-dark ones you had on your ceiling when you were a kid). And really, how DO people survive without running water?

So, maybe camping doesn’t seem like the best idea for you, City Girl. That’s what New Yorker Heather Menicucci thought at first, too, until she found a special boy convincing her to give camping a go. Something about the trip clicked with her, and now she’s all about nature. She’s written the book, “Let’s Get Primitive: The Urban Girl’s Guide to Camping” (Ten Speed Press, $14.95) based on her experiences.

In the book Menicucci shares her advice on what to pack, what to eat and how to fit it all in a single backpack. She also offers advice on how to pick a site (she recommends practicing first at an established campground before setting out on your own), pitch a tent and cook over a fire. The book even has delicious, campfire-friendly recipes.

Of course, being a girl, she also offers camping fashion advice: “Any hat, headband or clip is camouflage for bad camping hair. But braids are especially nice for taming primitive hair – when you take them out your hair will be wavy and willowy. Instant earth goddess.”

If her advice and light-hearted personal stories aren’t enough to convince you to flee the city for the wilderness for a weekend, she includes a list of “recommended reading and recommended movies” that will be sure to get you in the adventurous mood.
