Keegan: Marbury laughable TV host
Next on the agenda: A visit to the gravesite of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of basketball. Purpose: To check for evidence he has turned over since viewing a recent addition to the idiot box.
The first problem with the show is its name. Stephon Marbury is the host of “Stars on Stars,” which airs Fridays at 4:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Network (Sunflower Broadband channel 36).
Kobe Bryant, a star, was the first guest. Marbury is paid like and has the statistics of a star, yet every team he leaves becomes better. Every team he joins becomes worse. His gaudy stats are the result of monopolizing the basketball for so much of the shot clock he’s bound to get credit often via points and assists. He dribbles excessively, and if he can’t create a good shot for himself, he passes to a teammate, who often is rushed into taking a bad shot. Marbury plays little defense. Bad player.
Give him a pass on the show’s name based on his nice gesture. He sells a line of sneakers called Starbury, priced at $15 a pair, a statement against gouging young basketball players.
As for “Stars on Stars,” well, if Conan O’Brien is willing to pull a lever periodically that signifies he’s about to show highlights, it has a legitimate shot of making it as a comedy.
In the 30-minute first episode, Marbury said the word “like” 90 times. As promised, the show gave a glimpse into an athlete’s personal life. Marbury talked with Bryant about the issue of how to get his young daughter into her own bed.
“I made that mistake of letting my daughter sleep with me, and that’s like the worst mistake I ever made, cuz it’s, like, you be in the room with your wife and, like, you be laying down, you wanna, you know, and it’s, like, it’s not happening,” Marbury said.
Thanks for sharing, Steph.
Never accused of being a winner, Marbury queried Bryant on the topic. Bryant won three NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and made it to the NBA Finals a fourth time.
“I mean, when you won them championships, like, like, being in that, being in that world, like, I’m trying to get where you’ve been four times,” Marbury said. “I want to basically, I’m trying to, like, understand, like, what is that world like, just the process of getting it, of knowing every night when you step on the court you’re going to win?”
Marbury also talked finances, referring to former teammate Kevin Garnett’s contract: “I’m talking about he went in there and was, like, ‘Put the money in the bag.’ You know what I’m saying? I was like, ‘Oooh, K.G. just hit ’em for 126 (million dollars).’ A.I. (Allen Iverson) was, like, ‘I’m about to hit ’em for 150.’ I’m, like, damn, 150. I’m, like, these numbers soundin’ crazy.”
Never let it be said Marbury’s an ingrate.
“I want to say thank you for coming on the show, man,” he said. “Stars on Stars for real. You know what I’m saying? East meets West. It’s just mad love, man. I appreciate it cuz I know this is something different – you know what I’m saying? – for you, cuz it’s hard for you. And I understand that. You know what I’m saying? You gotta lotta love, for real. Everybody from Coney Island, N.Y. Kids love you. And we’re gonna make sure that they love you even more. And that’s real. That’s what’s up. A’right?”
Kobe, too, was grateful, perhaps for not being asked a single question of substance. Bryant spoke the final words: “Best show I’ve done.”
